3344 - Writing Process

The writing process consist of five stages. The first stage is PREWRITING. This stage can consist of brainstorming and gathering your thoughts together. For example, make a list of three to five topics and pick the one most interesting to you. Next students can draw or write about the topic to develop with information about the topic.
The second stage is DRAFTING. This stage is to write down ideas and thoughts on paper. This stage is to go way out with your ideas and no need to worry about spelling, punctuation and any other aspects of writing. Focusing on writing the paper rather than the corrections will lead the students to focus on the contents.
The third stage is REVISING. Revising is when you will be adding, deleting, substituting, and rearranging the paper. Revising should not only be done by you, it needs to also be advised by others to get their advice about the paper.
The fourth stage is EDITING. This is when you put the paper in its final form. This is when you fix the paper of any written errors such as capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure usage and the format.
The last stage is to PUBLISH. This is when students bring their work orally. When students share their work out loud to an audience it makes them feel like authors. This is when the students have the opportunity to publish their work as a book, writing contest and anthology.
Not only does the five stages teach a student how to write but it builds their self esteem and especially once they have completed and seen the final product.
