Chapter 2: Culurally Responsive Classrooms
As I read this chapter I gathered that culture is actually ways of knowing, believing, valuing, and thinking among a group of people. Culture is a variety of things among groups of people such as holidays, what they eat and wear, religion and etc. When a child attends school they will learn the schools culture such as the schedule for the beginning and ending of the school day, the organization of the school day, discipline, and homework. These practices that a school system follows is a cultural value or belief.

If your ever wonder on how you will know about all the children you will teach, the best advice the chapter gives is, as we continue to educate ourselves on multicultural features and aspects, is to know what questions to ask about the students we teach.

Today in class was fun and interesting to work in groups to learn a little bit about the others culture. We also did a lot of brainstorming on how we were going to decorate our flag and combine all of our cultures in one.
The author I chose this week is an author by the name of Daisy Meadows. Daisy Meadows is a
pseudonym for the four writers of the Rainbow Magic books. A pseudonym is someone who wants to hide their identity. This author writes her books about fairies and these fairies play different roles such as the rainbow fairies, weather fairies, party fairies and jewel fairies and the list continues and continues. These books are for readers from second to fourth grade. To find out more information visit the website: www.fantasticfiction.co.uk

Another interesting author is Elizabeth Koda-Callan, she is from New York with bestselling children's books in New York. Her popular books are The Magic Locket and The Silver Slippers.

  1. April,

I would have never thought of how a school day is set up as being a part of a culture. But after reading this chapter, I completely understand that it is. School days and schedules are completely different all around the world. And I completely agree that in order to understand our students, we have to continue to educate ourselves. Good job :)
