M&W EDRG 3321 Guided Reading Books & Websites

What is Guided Reading?
Guided reading is reading with children. The goal of Guided Reading is to teach students to independently use reading strategies at their instructional level. It is a bridge between shared reading and independent reading. Guided Reading provides opportunitites for teachers to work with small groups of children on text that closely matches the children's needs, abilities, and interests. The teacher acts as a facilitator, using prompts and questioning strategies to guide children to comprehension. Using a book introduction, the teacher sets the scene, arouses student interest and engages children in discussion. In Guided Reading everything is learned within the context of a book.
This guided reading website has a lot of reading information but it is very useful. It expalins the different teaching methods and classroom activities from grades K-6. Each grade level has steps to follow such as:
1. Title: Read, Cover, Remember, & Retell
2. Title: Guided Reading Lesson Outline
3. Fluency mini-lessons
This website is not one of my favorites but it does have useful information. It does lack all the extras.

This website discuss the purpose of guided reading.
How do teachers have students do it.
How the student can adapt.
Assessment & Evaluation Considerations
Teacher Resources
I would definitely consider this wesite it also has a lot of extras.

What is fiction? Fiction to me is love stories. When I read about love stories, I tend to think about my own life experiences. Fiction is a story. The different types of fiction that are used with children are contemporary realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. In historical fiction children can vicariously live the issues, actions and emotions of people in previous generations. During this time I can imagine how studnets tend to think back about their parents and grand parents. This is great opportunity for the teacher to combine culture and fiction.

When I think of Poetry I think of rhyming or a story with creative words. When I think of poetry, I think of the lenght about a page long with one picture, representing the whole piece of poetry. The chapter teaches you how to bring children and poetry together. One of the most aspects of sound on poetry for children is rhyme. Rhyming provides connection with words and sometimes a musical effect. The other aspect to teach children about poems is the rhythm. Some children naturally respond to rhythm. Poets write poems for children in a forward organization so children can follow the rhythm. Poems also have shape. Poems can be written with all capital letters, as a latter, from left to right and etc. Shape affects how you read a poem, defining the rhythm as well as the speed at which the poem unfolds.
Children should not be drilled on how to write poem or to memorize them. When children are drilled with poems it make it too complex. Children should write their own thoughts about a poem and they should come invent their own style and shape of poem.

EDRG 3321- M&W Non-Fiction

When I think of non-fiction I think of the movie "Marley And Me". This movie is so real. Its about a family that gets a puppy and the puppy grows up and destroys the house. The wife wants to get rid of the dog and they try but they start to miss the dog so he comes back. They move to a bigger house and the dog begans to get sick. Before this the family already has had so many years of memories with the family. One day the family noticed the dog was asting different and wanted to be left alone. They had to put him down because he was in so much pain. The family was heart broken and had a burial for him. It was sad, the kids wrote him letters and they were very touching. This story is so real because this usually what happens to familys when they have a dog. You get attached and its hard to let go. This movie is a non-fiction movie. You gotta watch it, it will make you cry and make you appreciate your animals. Animals do have feelings.

M&W EDRG 3321 and 3344 Stelletto Women

Today the news announced about the stelleto women who are professionals who make great money but enjoy smoking drugs. They interviewed these women and they claim they don't smoke infront of the public. infront of children but only at home. They do it at home for either relaxation or I guess for the weird feeling they get from it. The news showed hoe these woman prepared the drug and how they lit it. Whatever these women decide to do id their own business but there is no need to announce it on television. The media needs to remember that children watch the news and then think well they're doing as professionals why can't we. We need to function too? This is a big controversy.

M&W EDRG 3321 What I Think About Fiction

It was fun in class today. We discussed what each of us thought what fiction is. When I think of fiction I think of "Lord Of The Rings". The little grimlin character reminds me of something that is suppost to be a hero or a bad guy. When books have characters that are good or evil it reminds me of fiction because the story usually ends like a fairytale with a happy ending. I don't really read adult bboks but I do read childrens books and most of them are fiction. My daughters enjoy fiction because the ending is happy or something happened good to the character. I like reading books to them that have a moral to the ended so they can learn from it and then we discuss what the moral of the story was. I'll ask them questions like why was the character sharing, why was the character using words like thank you and yes sir? Then at the end they get the idea of sharing is the way we should be with others and using are manners is the way to speak. I certainly think books reflect on adults and children and we should not judge a book by its cover. From here on out I will definitely find a book that I like and start making time to read. Today in class I gathered that so many people read and make time for it because its relaxing and enjoying. Its also important to read to keep our minds stimulated and to learn new information and vocabulary.
